IHI UP
By Jack Gray

‘IHI UP’ is a dynamic breath and cultural movement workshop by internationally reknowned Māori contemporary dance artist, U.C Regents Scholar 2018, and Artistic Director of Atamira Dance Company, Jack Gray of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Responding to the theme of martial arts and dance, Gray considers the starting point for cultural survival tactics from a Māori Haka and global contemporary dance world intersectionality. This exploration of indigenous life force is enacted through ideas of inner and outer energy extremes.

The workshop comprises discussion and instructed movement that covers ideas and notions of some of the performative qualities recognised internationally as Haka, the Māori dance. Haka is often described by Westerners as “aggressive” or “sexualised” - and is both and neither as it can also be attributed to activated physicalities stemming from energetic vitality (in this culture it is called Ihi, in others it might be called Chi).

‘IHI UP’ will activate our creativity through land acknowledgement and sharing cultural diversity between American and Aotearoa understandings, stories and responses to the current world climate. Free and Open to the Public Kaufman 208 RSVP Requested
