POSITION DESCRIPTION
The UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance is conducting an Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor search for a scholar-practitioner. We seek a colleague who will strengthen our offerings in ethnographic film, multimodal and/or digital media studies and production, artistic/curatorial practices, or community-based social justice work. Ideal candidates should have experience teaching both the study and praxis of a particular genre or art form, with an emphasis on the politics of arts production, the arts of contemporary social movements, and/or critical curatorial studies. We hope to hire an experienced educator with a humanistic approach that takes collaborative research design seriously in their work and in their course offerings. Applications are particularly sought from candidates who specialize in intersectional analyses of at least one of the following areas: food justice, environmental stewardship, animal ethics, other-than-human relatedness, and/or the medical humanities. Community engagement should be immediately obvious in the candidate’s published work, whether with Indigenous or other communities of color, NGO’s, non-profit/activist organizations, incarcerated people, immigration rights groups, or another self-defined collective working toward decolonization or social justice goals. Our program values analyses from beyond a single disciplinary canon and we welcome applications from persons whose research foregrounds the perspectives of historically underrepresented communities with a view towards decolonization. Ideal candidates will be conducting interdisciplinary research with a commitment to the generation of theory that takes the form of both scholarly and creative outputs.
The Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance binds four degree programs: a BA in World Arts and Cultures, a PhD in Culture and Performance (CAP), a BA in Dance and MFA in Choreographic Inquiry. This position specifically will be committed to research, teaching, and service toward the WAC BA and CAP PhD programs. As a tenure-track position, we desire candidates with relevant teaching experience, the capacity to develop pedagogy and contribute to shaping curricula across the World Arts and Cultures BA and doctoral program. Successful candidates will participate in doctoral recruitment, teaching, advising, as well as offer both undergraduate and graduate courses that draw from and contribute to multiple disciplines. Additionally, our department’s faculty maintain collaborative relationships with partners across campus, including the Fowler Museum, the Hammer Museum, the Prison Education Program, a burgeoning food studies program, the Center for Community Engagement, and the Center for Digital Humanities. We especially welcome applications from candidates whose research bears potential to further these collaborative relationships.
